Definition of luminescence
i. The emission of light by a substance that has received energy or electromagnetic radiation of a different wavelength from an external stimulus; also, the light so produced. It occurs at temperatures lower than those required for incandescence.
See Also: phosphorescence, fluorescence

ii. Quantized electromagnetic emissions resulting from electrons in a crystal structure dropping from a higher excited state to a lower one.
Compare with: thermoluminescence, triboluminescence
