Skeletal chromite hosted in sulfides (pyrrhotite and pentlandite).

Chromitite bands in partly serpentinized dunite. Chromite concentrates from this locality contain ca. 0.5 g/t total PGE. Polished slab, field of view 13 cm, sample AN2111. Collected May 1999 by Franz Bernhard, photo and collection Franz Bernhard.

A 4.8 by 2.5 cms black crystalline mass which was part of a larger boulder. Such boulders are found in some creekbeds in the area. JSS specimen and photograph.

This specimen consists of a very large single crystal of Chromite. The crystal still retains several well defined, somewhat complex octahedral faces. Specimen size is 4.14cm x 3.5cm x 2.5cm.

The sample is 6 cm x 4 cm. I collected the sample from the Chrome Claim's main pit in 1991. Most of the Chromite in the Bird River Sill is subhedral but occasionally when there is a white matrix the Chromite forms 1 to 2 mm octahedrons.

So called 'leopard-ore': black grains (up to 1 cm) of chromite in a yellow-green rock. Find (1987), collection and photo Erik Vercammen

1.8 x 1.7 x 1.2 cm. This is one of the largest, equant chromite crystals I have seen. It is usually found in tiny crystals or grains. It is an octahedron with some luster and a mottled black color.
