Abstract/Notes | The Turó de Montcada quarry, located in front of Montcada i Reixac (Barcelona, Catalunya), began to work in 1916. The calcareous rock extraction supplies material to the big cement plant built at the foot of the hill. The Turó is located in the Paleozoic structural system of the Catalonian Coastal Ranges. In the low Silurian there are phosphorite nodules that provide PO4 anions which form with the cations Al(III), Cu(II), Fe(III), Ca(II) a very interesting serie of phosphate minerals: variscite, strengite, crandallite, libethenite, koninckite... Some of these are the first time that have been found in Catalonia. The presence of variscite gives an archaeological interest because it could be possible that some of the Neolithic worked variscites found in Catalonia could come from Montcada, not only from Gavà Prehistoric Mines. |
